Perfect Peace

Perfect Peace

In times of trouble, distress and grief we often turn to music for comfort and encouragement no matter our belief system. For thousands of years mankind has written lyrics and music to express beliefs and emotions that could not be expressed just in spoken word alone. Think back to a moment in time when a song captured your attention because of a celebration in your life or a time when despair was heavy on your heart. How did the song make your feel? How did it provide peace and confidence?

God is the creator of all things and He has used music throughout history to rally His people and comfort the broken hearted. As a musician I automatically gravitate to music for all kinds of situations and circumstances in my life. It is very natural for me, but I realize it is not as natural for others. None the less, God has given us a way to communicate truth about Him and offer praise, worship and adoration to Him through lyrics and music that lift our eyes and hearts toward heaven.

During times like these I pray that you have been comforted by some of the great music of our faith. A hymn God brings to mind often in good and difficult times is “Like a River Glorious” by Frances R. Havergal.

Verse
Like a river glorious is God’s perfect peace,
Over all victorious in its bright increase;
Perfect, yet it floweth fuller ev’ry day;
Perfect, yet it growth deeper all the way.

Hidden in the hollow of His blessed hand,
Never foe can follow, never traitor stand;
Not a surge of worry, not a shade of care,
Not a blast of hurry touch the spirit there.

Ev’ry joy or trial falleth from above,
Trac’d upon our dial by the Sun of Love;
We may trust Him fully all for us to do;
They who trust Him wholly find Him wholly true.

Chorus
Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blest;
Finding, as He promised, perfect peace and rest.

The scriptures tell us in Isaiah 26:3, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”

In the midst of a global pandemic, or a personal health crisis, or a family quarrel, or a financial short fall, or fill in the blank, where is your mind? Are you trusting in the never changing life-giving truth of God’s word? Are you resting in the truth that He is holding you in the palm of His hand? Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blest; Finding, as He promised, perfect peace and rest.

Blessings,

Ryan
