Christmas! There is no other time of the year quite like it. The stores are all full of beautiful wrapping paper for the gifts we display and brightly colored and sparkling white lights and ornaments of every shape and kind we use to decorate our Christmas trees. Every type of Christmas "thing" we can
imagine, all waiting for us to make our Christmas a little more "Merry and Bright".
We look forward with excitement and anticipation to festive gatherings with
friends and family. We carve the turkey, pour the eggnog and relive the stories
of Christmases long past. And, we make very sure that our personal
Christmas traditions are very much alive and well. And, Ithink, that is as it should be.
But, honestly, none of those "Christmas Things" are what brought you and me
together here this evening. No, we came for the same reason the Shepards and the Wisemen came on that very first Christmas night. We came seeking! We came because our hearts told us we needed to come. We came to hear, to listen to the good news. To ponder, to experience and to remember that our loving Father, Holy God, Creator of all things, loved us so much that He gave
us the very first Christmas gift. His only son. Jesus. And, let us never forget that the baby in the manger was also our Savior on the cross. And whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life!
So, let each of us always remember, it is not the pretty paper, the brightly colored lights, the decorations, the gatherings or even cherished family traditions that serve as the foundation for our celebration. None of these "Christmas things" have stirred our hearts and urged us here tonight. No, we
celebrate, we worship, for one purpose only, JESUS, ONLY JESUS.
